Fill out application form

You can obtain or download the application form for the issuance of a learner's permit directly from me, from your municipality of residence or from the Road Traffic Office (also online). Please read it carefully and fill it out completely and truthfully.

Eye Test

The list of approved opticians and ophthalmologists for the eye test can be accessed using the QR code on the application form. The application form and a valid identity card must be taken to the eye test. The result is entered directly on the application form. The eye test is then valid for 2 years.

Good to know: If you submit another application for a learner's permit after the 2-year period, a new eye test is required.

First Aid Course

If you already have a category B, A or A1 driver's license, you no longer need to submit the first aid certificate. The First Aid Course can be completed from the age of 16 and is valid for a maximum of 6 years. In most cases, it lasts 10 hours and is divided into two days, often on weekends or in the evening. Holders of a driver's license of one of the mentioned categories as well as physicians, dentists, veterinarians and medical care personnel with a recognized diploma are exempt from attending the course.

My tip:  Attend your First Aid Course at the Samaritan Association of the Canton of Zug and take a few friends with you - because it's simply more fun together.

Submitting the application form

You must submit the completed application for the learner's permit to the residents' registration office in your municipality of residence or directly to the Road Traffic Office in person.

Do not forget: Include a current color passport photo and, if required, a valid original emergency responder's card, and bring an identity card or passport to the audition. Foreigners require a foreigner's identity card.

Good to know: The application can be sent to the Road Traffic Office at the earliest two months before reaching the minimum age. A new photo is required for each learner driver application, even if you have already submitted an application or are already in possession of a driver's license. A photo booth is located at the main entrance of the Road Traffic Office. Only vending machine photos or photos taken by a photographer are allowed. Self-printed PC pictures will be rejected.

Driving Theory Test

Once your application for the learner's permit has been approved, you will receive the registration for the basic theory test by mail within 5-10 days and can arrange an examination date onlie in the eDispo. The access code is valid for two years. Now you need to prepare for the upcoming basic theory test (with an app for download, CD-Rom, or online - make sure to use asa approved questions). The basic theory test is done on the tablet (language of choice: D,F,I,E) and contains 50 questions, which you have 45 minutes to answer. You can score a total of 150 points. You are allowed a maximum of 15 faults. Note: The asa has published only 66% of all available questions. If you already have a category B, A or A1 driver's license, you are exempt from the basic theory test.

Good to know: The minimum age is 17 years. The basic theory exam can be taken at the earliest 1 month before reaching the minimum age. You can find a large selection of learning materials for the basic theory test in the app store for download, in specialist shops or on the Internet. The Road Traffic Office of the Canton of Zug does not recommend or distribute any learning materials.

Practical Driving Lessons

After a successful basic theory test, you will receive your personal learner's permit valid for 2 years. Now you can start with the practical driving lessons with the driving instructor and, if possible, consilidate what you have learned with private learning rides - because as you know, practice makes perfect and this applies in particular to driving.

At the practical driving test, an independent, rule-compliant, safe, cooperative and environmentally conscious driving style is required - a big but achievable goal. From the first driving lesson on, you will be trained systematically, efficiently, professionally and goal-oriented with the most modern learning methods, so that you are optimally prepared for the driving test and also immediately successful. Choose the pace of your driving training yourself, because your goal is also my goal. If you bring enough time, will and flexibility, I also offer you an intensive driving education in a rush.

Good to know: For admission to the practical driving test of catg. B, a learner's driving permit of at least 1 year is required. No learner's driving experience is required for drivers who obtain a learner's permit from the age of 20 or who obtain a second learner's permit before the age of 20. The learner's permit is only valid in Switzerland and must be carried in the original on every learner's ride. During the entire driving training, a general driving ban applies for learner drivers as well as for accompanying persons in case of impaired driving, e.g. under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Most important requirements for accompanying persons on private learner rides:

  • must be at least 23 years old
  • must have a definitive category B driver's license for at least 3 years
  • must be able to use the handbrake at any time during the drive
  • must ensure safety and compliance with traffic regulations
  • must visibly display a "learner driver L" on the rear of the vehicle

My tip: Start your driving training with the practical driving lessons with the driving instructor - because it always takes longer to improve what you have learned incorrectly than to learn something new correctly right from the start. To ensure that your driving training this year is efficient and successful, I recommend that you have a training talk with your driving instructor in advance. In this way we ensure that your necessary learning driving practice is also controlled in the private environment and can be checked at any time.

Traffic Safety Course (VKU)

In order to be admitted to the driving test, you must first have attended the mandatory Traffic Safety Course (VKU). I recommend that you attend the VKU as soon as possible so that you can immediately apply what you have learned in your driving lessons. A valid learner's permit is a prerequisite. Exception: If you already have a category A, A1 or B1 driving license, you do not have to attend the traffic Safety Course.

Practical Driving Test

As soon as you are ready for the test, your driving instructor will register you for the practical driving test. This usually takes +/- 50 minutes and is conducted by an examination expert from the Road Traffic Office. The driving test in the canton of Zug is officially in German. I will carefully prepare you for the exam so that you can easily follow the instructions of the expert. Normally you will take the driving test with your usual driving school car - you know it from your preparatory driving lessons and are very familiar with it. Now you can prove what you have learned!

After a successful practical driving test, you will receive an official test stamp in your learner's permit. Congratulations for your test success - from now on you are allowed to drive a category B car without an accompanying person. As a new driver, you will receive your temporary driver's license on probation in credit card format about 10 days later (valid for 3 years - noted on the driver's license under the heading 4b "Expiration date").

Failed your driving test? This is no embarrassment, because throughout Switzerland a good third of all learner drivers do not pass the driving test at the first attempt. Accept the mistakes you have made, learn from them and prepare yourself seriously for a second attempt - now you will certainly be successful! For a third attempt, you need written proof from your driving instructor that you have completed the practical driving education. If the third driving test is also negative, you will only be admitted to the fourth attempt if you have successfully completed a computer-assisted driving aptitude test. If you fail the practical driving test four times or if the driving aptitude test is negative, the validity of your learner's permit expires. If you want to retake the practical driving test, you will need a traffic psychology certificate confirming your driving aptitude.

Good to know: If the probationary driving licence has to be withdrawn due to the commission of a moderate or serious violation, the probationary period shall be extended by one year. The probationary driving licence expires if a further moderate or serious violation is committed during the probationary period. A new learner's license can be applied for at the earliest after a waiting period of at least one year since the commission of the offense and proof of fitness to drive by means of a traffic psychology report. During the probationary period, a general ban on driving under the influence of alcohol still applies - an alcohol zero tolerance!

  • Who drives, does not drink
  • Only get behind the wheel when you are rested
  • Adjust speed
  • Focus on the road

My tip: If you don't overestimate your abilities and drive with foresight and defensively, you're well on your way to getting through the probationary period safely.

WAB-Course

In order to obtain a permanent driver's license, you must attend an exciting and instructive WAB-Course in the first year of your trial period. In this practice-oriented course you will gain the experience of many years of driving in one day.

The WAB-Course improves your ability to recognize and avoid dangerous traffic situations before they occur. Experience emergency braking and cornering on a closed track. At the same time, it raises your awareness of your own abilities and optimizes your traffic sense so that you can develop a cooperative and environmentally friendly driving style. True to the motto: learning through experience.

Good to know: If you forget to visit the WAB-Course in the first year of your trial period, you can expect a fine of up to CHF 300.00 in the case of a police control. Anyone who has not attended the WAB-Course by the time the probationary driver's license expires is immediately no longer authorized to drive. Contact the Road Traffic Office immediately so that you can make up the course.

My tip: Plan your further training early and attend your WAB-Course at TCS Touring Club Schweiz (Rabatt für TCS-Mitglieder), VAZ-TCS Verkehrsausbildungszentrum in Erstfeld (courses also available in English) or at WAB Zentralschweiz in Ruswil and take a few friends with you - because it's simply more fun together.

More information and other course organizer about the WAB-Course can be find at www.2-Phasen.ch

The definitive driver's license

Congratulations - you have reached your goal! After the probationary period (min. 3 years), you will receive your permanent driver's license directly from the Road Traffic Office. A valid probationary driver's license and timely attendance of the mandatory WAB course are required.

My tip: For your own interest, continue to follow the recommendation: "Never overestimate your own abilities and always drive with foresight and defensively."

I wish you continued fun and joy in driving - and always a safe and accident-free ride.

Step by step - in 4 levels to exam maturity

Pretraining - Basic training - Advanced training - Perfection training

1. Pretraining - car under control

You will be familiarized in detail with the handling of the car. In the process, you will learn the basic understanding of driving dynamics and the interaction of the individual motion sequences - because safe control of the car is the basis of driving. The first driving tests take place exclusively on roads and squares with little traffic. The main focus is on getting to know the car.

2. Basic training - road reading and anticipation

Your car operation becomes increasingly automated and you develop a feeling for the correct lane and speed configuration. You will learn the correct gaze and observation technique and a correct dangerous behavior mainly on roads with little traffic. Another part of the basic training is getting to know the car dimensions even in tight spaces and perform various parking and turning maneuvers for this purpose. Simply put, it's about getting to know the road.

3. Main training - swimming along in the traffic and always keeping an eye on your partners

Here the areas of the basic training are further automated and consolidated. You learn to incorporate the influences of your traffic environment into your driving behavior by adjusting your speed according to the situation, intuitively anticipating, planning ahead, detecting moments of danger and anticipating the behavior of road users. You develop a responsible and environmentally conscious driving style and you can increasingly move independently and safely even on busy roads. In plain language you get to know your traffic partners and their behavior.

4. Perfection training - drive independently and make the right decision

You are gradually reaching test maturity and now have to prove yourself in all traffic areas. This also includes correct driving at higher speeds on the motorway/car road. You independently assess complex traffic situations and adapt your driving behavior correctly to the situation. We will continue to test and fine-tune your newly acquired driving skills with pre-test drives until you can demonstrate an independent, rule-compliant, safe, cooperative, environmentally aware and responsible driving style even under mental stress. Now you can prove what you have learned at the driving test - good luck!

Be successful - I will gladly support you to reach your personal goal!
